Man Dies in Shooting in Alleyway
A suspected gang member died Saturday after a Friday night brawl in an alleyway erupted in gunfire, police said.
Richard Cortez, 25, of Santa Ana was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he died about 5:20 a.m Saturday from a gunshot wound to the chest, said Santa Ana Police Sgt. Dick Faust.
The shooting occurred about 11 p.m. Friday. Police responded to a call about a fight involving about 10 people in an alley in the 1000 block of Grant Street.
During the fight near a sprawling Minnie Street apartment complex, someone opened fire with a handgun, police said.
When police arrived, Cortez was found lying wounded in the alley, and several friends were trying to revive him, said Faust. All of the suspects had fled, he said.
