The pilot of a twin-engine airplane was killed Saturday night when his craft crashed and burst into flames on a dirt road near Hesperia, northeast of Los Angeles.

The unidentified pilot was believed to be the sole occupant of the Piper Aztec, which was “pretty well consumed by flames,” said Sgt. Gary Stroup of the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department.

Stroup said the crash occurred at about 7:05 p.m., southwest of the Hesperia Airport.

It was not known where the flight originated or what might have caused the accident.
