TENNIS ROUNDUP : Stich Is Ousted; Sanchez and Bruguera Make Final

Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia completed a rain-interrupted 6-3, 6-4 victory over Wimbledon champion Michael Stich, then was eliminated in the semifinals of the Swiss Open Saturday at Gstaad, Switzerland.

Fifth-seeded Emilio Sanchez breezed past the seventh-seeded Novacek, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to today’s final. He faces top-seeded Sergi Bruguera, his teammate on the Spanish Davis Cup team.

Bruguera made it to the final for the second year in a row by defeating fourth-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia, 6-1, 7-5.

Novacek had a 6-3, 5-4 edge over the second-seeded Stich in Friday’s quarterfinals when rain stopped play.

Jim Courier and Michael Chang advanced to the final of the Gunze World tournament at Osaka, Japan.

Courier, this year’s French Open champion, defeated U.S. Open champion Pete Sampras, 6-4, 6-3, and Chang, the 1989 French Open champion, beat Patrick McEnroe, 6-4, 6-4.

Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina, the Wimbledon runner-up, and Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria advanced to the women’s final. Sabatini beat Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-4, 6-4, and Katerina Maleeva, Magdalena’s older sister, defeated Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

Alberto Mancini of Argentina made a remarkable comeback after losing the first eight games to beat third-seeded Alexander Volkov, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals of the Swedish Open at Bastad, Sweden.

Mancini, seeded eighth, will play second-seeded Magnus Gustafsson in today’s final. Gustafsson also came from one set down, outlasting his fellow Swede Christian Bergstrom, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in a match twice interrupted by rain.

Seventh-seeded Javier Frana of Argentina outlasted Mark Kratzmann of Australia, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, to advance to the final of the Hall of Fame Championships at Newport, R.I.

Frana, ranked 109th in the world, will face unseeded Bryan Shelton in the championship match. Shelton, ranked 147th, defeated Todd Martin, 7-5, 6-4, in the other semifinal.
