American golfers Ken Green, Mark McCumber, Andy Bean, Billy Ray Brown and Jim Hallet angered British Open organizers by failing to show up for the final qualifying competition at Southport, England.
George Wilson, deputy director of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, said the five golfers “will all be receiving a serious letter demanding an explanation.”
Two stand-by players were admitted to the tournament, but three spots were not filled.
“There are young hopefuls willing and ready to travel the length of the country to take part,” Wilson said, “but we advised them not to travel because we thought we would be raising false hopes.”
The British Open begins Thursday at the Royal Birkdale Course.
