Universal Hit by Big Judgment: A federal jury in Santa Ana ordered Universal Pictures to pay more than $11.6 million to Accent Films in a breach of contract suit. Accent had contended that Universal reneged on an oral agreement to distribute the Roman Polanski film “Pirates,” which was later distributed by MGM/UA and bombed at the box office. “Universal is reviewing the verdict with its counsel and at this time has no further comment,” a spokeswoman for the studio said,
