Share

Left-hander Scott Bailes was activated off the disabled list after being idled by a sprained right foot. To make room on the roster, Cliff Young was sent to triple-A Edmonton.

Bailes, who last pitched June 29 against Texas, is 1-2 with a 3.86 earned-run average in 22 relief appearances. Young started the season with the Angels but was optioned to Edmonton on April 19.

Bobby Rose, whose two-run double Sunday sparked the Angels’ first major offensive production in a week, started Monday’s game in left field. Regular left fielder Luis Polonia was given a day off against left-hander Jeff Ballard of the Baltimore Orioles.

Rose usually plays second base, but has also played third base and first base. He said he also played left field during spring training, and he took some practice fly balls in left Monday to brush up.

Polonia has only three hits in his last 25 at-bats, reducing his batting average to .291. That’s his lowest point since April 12, when he was hitting .267 (four for 15).

Lance Parrish was the designated hitter Monday, only his third start in that spot. He took a one-for-21 slump into the game. . . . Jack Howell, recovering from the three-stitch cut on his right index finger that kept him from throwing, hasn’t played since July 1. . . . Wally Joyner began Monday’s game with 480 career RBIs, one short of tying Doug DeCinces for fifth on the club’s all- time list.
