COUNTYWIDE : Building Permit Fees to Rise About 37%

Fees for permits and services provided by the county Building and Safety Department will increase about 37%, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday.

The fees, for such things as building use permits and fire and safety inspections last increased in 1988, said Steve Riley, deputy director of the county’s Resource Management Agency.

Over the past 12 years, the fees charged at the Building and Safety Department have paid for the cost of those services, he said.

The increased fees will generate about $400,000 annually, assuming a modest increase in construction activity next year, Riley said.

Under the new rates, the fees for a new 2,930-square-foot single-family house will increase from $1,650 to $2,274, according to a county report.

A spokeswoman for the Building Industries Assn. of the Greater Los Angeles/Ventura Region said her group does not oppose the increase. She said the new fees bring the county’s levies in line with other counties in the region.
