Azusa : Swap Meet Plan Deadline

Share

Owners of a swap meet that operates every Sunday out of the Ed-Pac Drive-In Theaters on Foothill Boulevard have two months to come up with a redevelopment plan for the site, the City Council decided Monday.

Councilmen Harry Stemrich, Tony Naranjo and John R. Dangleis, saying the swap meet is not an asset to the city, voted against granting a variance to the operators until the redevelopment plan is in.

The swap meet operators for about a year have been trying to obtain a variance allowing them to operate with parking and vendor stall and aisle size requirements smaller than those required by the municipal code.

If the council and the owners do not reach agreement on the redevelopment and variance issues, the city could begin taking steps to close the swap meet--a process that would take three years or more.
