Furniture Giant May Land in Carson

Furniture giant Ikea, which was being wooed by developers and city officials in three South Bay communities, appears to be headed for Carson.

The City Council, which also acts as the city’s Redevelopment Agency, voted 3 to 0 Tuesday to enter into exclusive negotiations with Ikea and Carson Mall Partners, owners of Carson Mall.

The Swedish-based retailer has already signed a non-binding letter of intent to open a store in Carson Mall, which is in a designated redevelopment area.

City officials lauded the decision as a significant step in Carson’s quest to land the lucrative retailer. If a final agreement is reached, Ikea might generate up to $600,000 in sales tax revenue for the city, said Patrick Brown, community development director.
