U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL: ORANGE COUNTY’S DAY--LOS ANGELES 1991 : NOTEBOOK

She got the silver: Lanee Butler of San Juan Capistrano was the most successful Orange County sailor, with a silver medal in the women’s Lechner Division II competition.

In women’s Europe dinghy competition, Carolyn Ulander of Costa Mesa wound up eighth and Julia Norman of Newport Beach was ninth. Nancy Haberland of Satellite Beach, Fla., was the winner.

First time’s the charm: Playing together for the first time, Brian Hawkes of Santa Ana and Doug Ganim of Columbus, Ohio, won the gold medal in men’s doubles racquetball at USC’s Lyons Center.

Hawkes and Ganim shook off a first-game loss to defeat Texans Mike Guidry of Arlington and Drew Kachtik of Austin, 14-15, 15-11, 11-8.

Hawkes and Ganim have won a number of national and international doubles titles, but never with each other.

To reach the gold-medal match, Ganim and Hawkes defeated Tom Neill and Louis Vogel of Albuquerque, N.M., representing the North, 15-3, 15-8.

Not in the groove: Toni Bevelock of Santa Ana should have felt pretty confident going into Wednesday’s semifinal racquetball match against Malia Bailey of Norfolk, Va. After all, she had beaten Bailey in the semifinals of the U.S. National Singles Championships in Houston last May.

But Bailey, who teamed with Bevelock to take second place in the National Doubles Championship, took advantage of Bevelock’s erratic serving to post a 15-6, 15-6 victory.

“I was just kind of flat,” Bevelock said. “My percentage of first serves was pretty low and that’s unusual for me since serving is usually a strong point. If I don’t get (the serve) over, I get out of rhythm.”

Bevelock’s troubles continued in the bronze-medal match when she lost to Jackie Paraiso Gibson of San Diego, 15-10, 5-15, 11-6.
