Thieves Hit Home of Iran-Contra Figure
Police said Thursday that they are investigating the theft of documents from the home of the widow of Amiram Nir, a key Israeli player in Iran-Contra arms sales.
The statement followed a report in the Haaretz newspaper that thieves took papers and tapes linked to the affair from the home but that valuables were left untouched. Tel Aviv police said the widow, Judith Nir-Moses, reported the burglary on Tuesday.
The newspaper said the burglary occurred six weeks ago but was discovered only recently because Nir-Moses rarely enters the locked room from which the documents and tapes were taken.
Nir was killed in a plane crash in Mexico on Dec. 1, 1988, after he left government service. He was involved in mediating some of Israel’s sales of U.S. weapons to Iran after January, 1986.
The Iran-Contra affair involved sales of arms to Iran, allegedly in a bid to influence the release of Western hostages held by pro-Iranian captors in Lebanon.
