Local organizing committee officials released attendance figures of 13,635 for 15 events Thursday. Through the first seven days, the organizing committee reported that the cumulative attendance was 136,435.

At the same stage in Minneapolis-St. Paul last year, when the Festival set a record with more than half a million spectators over 10 days, the attendance was 328,057.

The organizing committee said that 2,250 tickets were sold for Thursday’s track and field competition at UCLA’s Drake Stadium, although some observers estimated the actual attendance at about 500. Meet director Dan Shrum said that an overnight count of ticket stubs revealed the attendance to be 673.

After decathlete Dave Johnson and hurdler Greg Foster withdrew Thursday, the track and field competition continued to be hurt by hard luck. Charlie Simpkins, who holds the Festival record in the triple jump, did not compete Friday. Officials said that he had missed his plane.
