Man Shot in Back While Riding Bicycle

A man was listed in serious condition at UC San Diego Medical Center on Saturday after being shot on a city street while riding a bicycle, police said.

The victim was identified only as Jose Martinez, who police said was in his early 20s.

Martinez was shot about 10:25 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of South 43rd Street, police said. Two men approached the bicyclist and addressed him, according to a police statement, but Martinez didn’t understand what they said. The victim was shot three times from behind as he attempted to leave the scene, police said.

San Diego police are investigating.
