SIMI VALLEY : Burglary Suspect Shot by Homeowner

A shootout early Saturday morning between a Simi Valley homeowner and two young men suspected of trying to burglarize his house left one of the suspects in critical condition and the homeowner with a minor head injury.

In critical condition is a 17-year-old Simi Valley youth who, with John Robert Kilroy, 22, also of Simi Valley is suspected of attempting to burglarize a string of area houses Friday night and early Saturday morning, a police report states.

The shootout occurred after the pair attempted unsuccessfully to enter a house on Kingman Avenue about 3 a.m., police said.

“The homeowner went outside and saw two males walking on Kingman,” the report states. “He called out to them and both suspects turned and fired handguns at him.” The homeowner returned fire with his own handgun.

The 17-year-old was hit in the lower back in the exchange of gunfire. Police said Kilroy fled, but was later arrested. The name of the injured youth, who was also arrested, was not released due to his age.

The 17-year-old underwent surgery at Simi Valley Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday, police said.

The homeowner suffered a minor gunshot wound to the head, for which he was treated and released, the report states.
