One year after a landslide caused a bluff walkway to collapse at the city’s popular Heisler Park, the City Council has approved a $650,000 project to repair the damage.
The project includes rebuilding an 8-by-25-foot stretch of walkway, the addition of a 14-foot-wide view terrace in the middle of the path and the repair of stairs at nearby Rockpile Beach.
The council approved the project in concept last week, 4 to 1, with Councilwoman Ann Christoph dissenting. The final project, including specifics of how the face of the bluff will be designed, must still be approved by the city’s Design Review Board, the City Council and the state Coastal Commission.
City Manager Kenneth C. Frank said work will probably begin in the fall. The council approved a resolution to allow repairs to begin as early as possible to prevent further damage to the cliff.
“If the storms are heavy this winter, a lot of the bluff will continue to erode,” Frank said.
The council also agreed Tuesday to apply for a $75,000 Coastal Conservancy grant to help pay for the project.
