An American Airlines DC-10 jetliner on a flight from Chicago landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday after the pilot shut down one of three engines because an indicator showed low oil pressure, officials said.
American Flight 181 carried 268 passengers and 11 crew members on the four-hour flight from Chicago, Smith said by phone from Ft. Worth, Tex. The wide-body jet landed without incident at 11:44 a.m., said Fred O’Donnell of the Federal Aviation Administration.
About one hour before reaching Los Angeles, the pilot “got an indication there was low oil pressure” in the engine on the jetliner’s tail, Smith said. The plane also has one engine on each wing.
