Your interview with Williams has made me a fan, a cultural groupie. His analysis that “the arts are not positioned as an essential, substantive educational-cultural dimension of our society (but) are positioned largely as a frill” is penetrating and devastating.

For more than 20 years, UCLA Design for Sharing, of which I am vice president for public relations, has been trying to fill this cultural vacuum. We bring thousands of young people from Los Angeles schools to live demonstration performances at UCLA’s Royce Hall--to chamber music concerts, dance and theater.

We have found that the appetite for the arts is enormous. We hope that Williams has made an impact and that our community begins to stir.
