Alhambra : Trash Rates Restructured

Share

Households with standard curbside trash pickup will be paying an extra 19 cents a month under a plan tentatively approved by the City Council on Monday.

However, City Manager Kevin Murphy said the 19-cent increase will be more than offset by savings in street-sweeping costs, which will drop for most people because the city will begin billing businesses for their share of that service.

Although people with curbside pickup will be paying slightly more, landlords and other property owners who use three-cubic-yard trash bins will get a $38 a month cut on their bills, which will fall from $107 to $69.

The council’s decision to restructure trash rates came after a study showed that bin users were subsidizing residents with regular curbside service. A final vote is scheduled for Aug. 5.
