From Times Staff and Wire Reports

More than 700 nurses at one Oakland medical center are prepared to walk off the job next weekend, and contracts affecting 2,500 nurses in seven other East Bay hospitals have expired. Strike preparations are under way at Merritt Peralta Medical Center despite a resumption of talks by a federal mediator. Members of the California Nurses Assn. have rejected a proposed contract calling for a 25% pay hike over two years, said Rick Seidler, the hospital’s chief operating officer. He said the package is comparable to recent ones at four San Francisco hospitals. But CNA spokeswoman Maureen Anderson said Merritt Peralta still lags behind the market.
