COUNTYWIDE : Board to Consider Graves at Library

Share

A plan to allow former President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, to be buried at his presidential library near Simi Valley will be considered today by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors.

The proposal was tentatively approved by a 3-2 vote of the Planning Commission last month. The commission also voted to allow library staff to serve food and hold meetings in the evening.

However, the decision was appealed to the supervisors by members of the Ventura County Environmental Coalition, who believe that the burial site will attract more visitors and increase traffic in the area.

At the same meeting, the Board of Supervisors will vote on a campaign contribution limit drafted by first-term Supervisor Maria VanderKolk.

The county’s first campaign-contribution limit won preliminary approval from the board last month. However, county officials found that it needed some technical changes to avoid ambiguity and decided to vote again on the revised ordinance.

As drafted, the measure would prohibit candidates from receiving more than $1,000 from an individual or business over a four-year election period and $2,400 from a political committee.

The measure also requires candidates to report all contributions, no matter how small.

State law requires candidates to report only contributions of $100 or more.
