Another former Dodger, Mike Marshall, who was signed to a minor league contract Friday, is scheduled to join the Angels today in Cleveland.

Manager Doug Rader said Marshall was called up to provide outfield depth before he knew Luis Polonia’s hyperextended left shoulder had improved dramatically by Monday. Polonia injured his shoulder Saturday while oversliding second base at Yankee Stadium, but he took batting practice Monday without difficulty.

“It’s a good chance for him to meet everybody, take some (batting practice), some infield and see how we stand,” Rader said of Marshall, who was two for eight in three games with Class-A Palm Springs.

Polonia probably won’t resume throwing until the Angels play at Detroit Wednesday and Thursday. He decided the real cause of his injury was that he had been dragged down by the weight of the ornate gold chains he wears around his neck.

“I took my jewelry off. I’ll wear lighter jewelry from now on,” he said.

After going 11 games without hitting a home run, the Angels have hit homers in seven consecutive games. . . . Dave Parker has a seven-game hitting streak, raising his average to .235. That’s his highest point since April 18. . . . Dave Gallagher went two for four Monday and is 11 for 28 (.393) on the trip. . . . Wednesday is the deadline for making trades without players being required to clear waivers. Angel Senior Vice President Dan O’Brien said last week his pursuit of a fifth starting pitcher had ended because other teams wanted top prospect Kyle Abbott, but a deal to bolster the offense is possible.
