Summit Preparation: President Bush consulted Andre Agassi and Kevin Costner at Camp David as he prepared over the weekend for his summit with Mikhail Gorbachev. Tennis champ Agassi helped the President with his backhand in a doubles game, and Bush played 18 holes of golf with Agassi and film star Costner. “We got creamed,” Costner confessed. Said Bush: “I hope that the summit with Gorbachev goes better than the golf with these guys.”

War Fallout: Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf laughed off suggestions in London that he might run for President. “You’re talking about a very hypothetical question. That’s a very hypothetical question.” But he didn’t say no. . . . Folksy humorist Garrison Keillor said in Denmark that thousands of Iraqi lives were unnecessarily lost in the Gulf War. He so incensed a group of Americans in western Denmark that they canceled him as a luncheon speaker.

Shot Down at Home: The town that Walker Percy called home has dropped a plan to rename a library in the late author’s honor. Some Covington, La., residents, including library volunteers, argued Percy did nothing to help the facility. Percy, who died last year, lived in Covington for 41 years. He wrote “The Moviegoer” and “Lost in the Cosmos.” In the end, Percy’s relatives and friends abandoned the idea. “It’s a shame we couldn’t honor probably the most famous person who’s ever called Covington home,” said a Percy friend.

Killing Fields: More than 1,500 residents of the seaside town of Les Sables D’Olonne in France marched Monday in support of a neighbor accused of killing an intruder stealing carrots from his field, and at the head of the crowd was Mayor Louis Guedon. Michel Paupion, 30, was charged over the weekend with involuntary manslaughter after shooting Dominique Caubet, 34, Friday. Marchers said Paupion, like many other townspeople, had become exasperated with repeated thefts by vacationers during the summer.
