Offensive lineman Gerald Perry went through his first workouts with the Rams on Tuesday and was impressive in a one-on-one drill against rookie pass-rush specialist Robert Young.

“It’s obvious he’s a good player like we thought,” offensive line coach Hudson Houck said. “He’s a little out of shape, obviously, as we thought would be the case.”

Perry, released from a Denver-area prison Saturday after serving 65 days for sexual assault and violation of probation, reported to the Rams at 295 pounds and is competing with newly signed Robert Cox at left tackle. Perry also is expected to play at left guard.

Backup quarterback Chuck Long will get the start and play about three quarters in Saturday’s game against the Falcons at Atlanta. Jim Everett won’t play at all, Coach John Robinson said. It will be Long’s first start since the 1988 season, when he started seven games for the Detroit Lions. . . . To make room on the 80-man roster for Perry, the Rams released linebacker Vernon Maxwell, a seven-year NFL veteran.
