Recession Is Over, Canada Declares: The nation confirmed that its recession has ended with a report that the economy grew in May, but analysts cautioned that the road back to prosperity, unlike earlier robust recoveries, will be slow and painful. Statistics Canada, a government agency, said the stronger-than-expected 0.6% growth in gross domestic product in May, after a 0.9% gain in April, was led largely by manufacturing and construction industries. Unemployment rose in June, however, to match March’s peak of 10.5%. The Conference Board of Canada predicts that it will stay above 10% until the end of 1992.
