A bloodhound from the Sheriff’s Department helped police track down a man suspected of forcing his way into a Seal Beach home and sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl, police said Thursday.

Sheriff’s Reserve Sgt. Larry Harris and his dog, Sable, were called in after police answered an early morning 911 call Wednesday that a man had entered a home through a bathroom window and sexually assaulted a girl inside the house. The incident at College Park West in northwest Seal Beach occurred at 3:20 a.m.

The dog followed the man’s scent for nearly 2 miles and found a suspect, James John Wilkerson, 43, of West Covina, hiding in the brush by the San Diego Freeway, police said. He surrendered, officers said, and was charged with burglary and sexual assault. He was being held in Orange County Jail on $25,000 bail.
