Three people were killed, including a man and a child from Anaheim, and two were seriously hurt when their pickup truck hit an oncoming tractor-trailer rig on a rural highway, state police said Thursday.

The pickup driver apparently hit the brakes and lost control Wednesday afternoon when traffic in front of him slowed for road construction. He swerved into the oncoming truck, said Senior Trooper Jim Rector of the state police.

The two Anaheim victims were Onofre Garcia, 33, the driver of the pickup truck, and 3-year-old Eldon Arqueta. The third man killed was not identified, although police speculated that he may have been a hitchhiker riding in the back of the pickup.

The driver of the tractor-trailer rig, Larry Hauser, 36, of Faith, S.D., was not hurt, Rector said.

Concepcion Arqueta, 31, and her son Jonathan, 9 months, were reported in serious condition Thursday at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. They were flown to the hospital by air ambulance, state police said.
