Hawthorne Bodybuilder Wins Amateur Title, Qualifies for World Cup

Hawthorne bodybuilder Otis Albert won the handicapped division of the Amateur Bodybuilders Assn. nationals Sunday at Buena Park.

Albert, who is blind, also finished in the top five of the novice division, qualifying him for the World Cup competition on Oct. 26.

Albert, 27, began competing 3 1/2 years ago. This is his first national title.

A California Beach Volleyball Assn. grass volleyball tournament will be held in Hermosa Beach Aug. 17 and 18, with registration from Monday though Aug. 9 at Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave.

Men’s and women’s two-person competition will be held the 17th, with co-ed competition on the 18th. Matches will be played at Hermosa Valley Park. Registration is $10 per person for CBVA members or $15 for non-members. Information: (213) 318-0280.

The 12th Street Grill volleyball team is offering a challenge for opponents in the Surf Festival six-man tournament.

The team will donate $100 to the Red Cross in the name of any team that beats them during this weekend’s competition at Manhattan Beach Pier.

The 12th Street Grill team is also challenging opponents to match their offer. The team finished fourth in last year’s Surf Fest and has won the title twice. Information: 12th Street Grill at (213) 546-4777.

Morningside High will be the site of the Elden Campbell Basketball Camp Monday through Aug. 9, with morning and afternoon sessions available at $65 per person.

Campbell, a center and forward for the Lakers, will be joined by coaches from Morningside and the Inglewood area. Camp cost includes a T-shirt and discounts on tennis shoes.

Some of the proceeds will benefit the high school’s athletic program. Sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Information: Ron Randle at (213) 753-1525.

Registration for the Dojo Forrest Martial Arts demonstration team is open to students of all ages. The martial arts program provides theatrical demonstrations at special events, using students at all levels.

The program, taught by Sensei Bossett, a second-degree sensei in Okinawan Shorin Ryu, is sponsored by the Inglewood Recreation and Community Services and is held at Rogers Park, 400 W. Beach Ave.

Ricci Luyties of San Diego and Adam Johnson of Capistrano Beach defeated John Hanley and Mike Whitmarsh, 14-13, to win a pro beach volleyball tournament last weekend in Milwaukee.

On the women’s tour, Angela Rock of Solana Beach and Karolyn Kirby of San Diego continued their domination with a 15-9 victory over Elaine Roque of Malibu and Janice O. Harrer of Honolulu at Santa Barbara.

The men compete in Cleveland this weekend and the women play in Tokyo.
