Von Karman Stamp Will Be Announced
Announcement of a Theodore von Karman postage stamp, to be issued in 1992, will be a highlight of a reception to be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at California Museum of Science and Industry in tribute to the scientist, whose research paved the way for supersonic flight.
Postmaster General Anthony Frank, Jet Propulsion Laboratory director emeritus William H. Pickering and Caltech president emeritus Lee DuBridge will be among guests at the reception, which is hosted by the museum’s Aerospace Historical Committee.
Issuance of the stamp will culminate a campaign begun in 1965 by Von Karman biographer Shirley Thomas, who chairs the Aerospace Historical Committee.
Von Karman, who was born in Hungary, became a U.S. citizen in 1936 and died in 1963. A much-honored rocket and missile scientist, he was a professor of aeronautics at Caltech and founder of the International Academy of Astronautics.
