As home to the Port of Los Angeles, San Pedro is an international town, according to the Chamber of Commerce.

And that’s not simply because of the freight passing through the community, the chamber’s Clint Miller said. It applies to people and food too. “There’s quite a mix here, Yugoslavians, Italians and Greeks--all the world has to offer. And each has spawned a restaurant,” he said.

This culinary variety will be displayed today from noon to 6 p.m. when the chamber stages its third annual “International Taste of San Pedro” on the grounds of the Doubletree (formerly Compri) Hotel at Cabrillo Marina.

Moving from one white canopied booth to another, the 4,000 people expected at the event will be able to sample appetizers, main dishes and desserts from more than 20 restaurants. In addition, several wineries will be pouring everything from house wines to choice reserve stock.

“We like to say there’ll be soup to nuts, and lobster and shrimp to vinegar chips,” said Miller. He added that nearly 100 different foods will be available to satisfy the curious and hungry.

Continuous live entertainment--country and Western, jazz, tropical pop and barbershop harmony--will accompany the al fresco wining and dining, and several San Pedro ethnic groups will present singing and dancing.

And people who feel the need for a stroll to conquer some of those added calories will be able to do a turn around the nearby pleasure boat harbor.

Admission at the door is $4 for adults and teen-agers, $1 for children ages 2 to 12, and free for under-2 gourmets. In addition, each “taste”--two to four ounces of food--costs from $1 to $4. The money is shared by the vendors and the chamber, which hopes the event will raise $10,000 for it.

Said Miller: “By the time someone visits four restaurants, he’ll be pretty full.”

The Doubletree is at 2800 Via Cabrillo Marina.
