There was an 8% increase in the number of homicides in the county between 1990 and 1989, according the the Coroner’s Office. The totals reached double figures in just three cities, and in two of those the 1990 total was lower than 1989’s. Five cities, of which Irvine is the largest, recorded no murders in 1990. Here’s how the various cities rate, based on the homicide rate per thousand residents:
