Riviera Country Club is expected to be chosen as host club for the 1995 national PGA tournament, according to information sent to members of the Pacific Palisades club.

“We notified the membership with a letter of intent to host the tournament,” Riviera executive Nancy Pearl said.

No contracts have been signed, but a formal announcement might be made this week in Carmel, Ind., where the 1991 championship will start Thursday.

The 77th PGA, scheduled for mid-August of 1995, would be the second time for Riviera and the third in Southern California. In 1983, Hal Sutton shot a first-round 65 at Riviera and went on to win despite a 66 in the final round by Jack Nicklaus. The tournament was held at Hillcrest Country Club in 1929.

Riviera was the site of the 1948 U.S. Open when it became known as “Hogan’s Alley,” after Ben Hogan won with a record score of 276.
