The Supreme Appeal: Entertainer Wayne Newton has taken his long, bitter legal battle with NBC-TV to the U.S. Supreme Court. The appeal, filed Monday, asks the Supreme Court to vacate or reverse last year’s ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which stripped Newton of a $5.2-million award from NBC. The case dates back to a series of stories aired by NBC in October of 1980 entitled “Wayne Newton and the Law,” which suggested Newton bought the Aladdin Hotel with the help of certain mob figures. Newton, who vehemently denied the report, has since sold his interest in the Las Vegas Strip resort.
