Man Shot to Death Outside His Apartment
A Long Beach man was shot to death outside his home while his wife looked on and his four children slept inside, police said.
Chhum Nhek, 45, was returning with his wife, Sokteng, from an evening out when two young men approached the couple in the courtyard of their apartment building, in the 1000 block of Dawson Avenue, about 3 a.m. Monday. The men did not attempt to rob the couple and opened fire without saying a word, according to Police Detective Dennis Robbins.
The assailants were described as being Latino, but police said they are not linking the murder to a feud between Cambodian and Latino gangs. But the family lives in an area besieged by gang activity and Nhek’s eldest son, Kimchheang, 18, said in an interview Tuesday that he belongs to an Asian gang.
