Police Do Enforce No-Skating Law

Share

An article titled “Skater’s Death Raises Safety Issue” (Times, Aug. 1) erroneously infers that the Hermosa Beach Police Department rarely enforces a Hermosa Beach Municipal Code prohibition governing the use of wheeled vehicles, including roller skates, on sidewalks in the community’s commercial zone. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Members of the Police Department’s Patrol Bureau, Downtown Strand/Beach Enforcement Detail and Traffic Enforcement Unit have been and remain under consistent and clear direction to enforce all laws and ordinances pertaining to the use of wheeled vehicles both on The Strand walkway and in the commercial zones throughout our community.

The sheer numbers of skate-shod residents and visitors to our community and an understanding that enforcement personnel cannot reasonably be expected to stop each and every violator may create a false perception among commercial business persons and the skating population that laws and ordinances are rarely enforced.

This is clearly not the case and members of the Hermosa Beach Police Department can be expected to stop violators when they observe them and to take appropriate enforcement action.
