Vote on School Secession Delayed

Parents in the Eastview section of Rancho Palos Verdes who last month won approval to secede from the Los Angeles Unified School District will have to postpone an election pending an appeal by the district to state authorities.

The Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization approved the parents’ secession bid July 3, several years after they began lobbying for permission to send their children to schools in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. An election to obtain voter approval of the matter had been tentatively scheduled for April, 1992.

But the Los Angeles school district filed an appeal with the state Department of Education on July 30, saying the transfer would hurt its racial integration efforts in the San Pedro-Lomita area. The election will be postponed until the appeal is resolved.
