SPORTSCOPE : Westside Team Wins Baseball Tournament

The West L.A. Bruins, a Little League team primarily made up of Westside 11- and 12-year-olds, won the 80-team Stars of Tomorrow tournament at LaCrosse, Wis., last week.

The Bruins won six games in three days, beating the Wauckesha Blazers, 4-0, for the championship. The team was coached by Ron Coleman. Team members were Ryan Coleman, Matthew Windisch, Danny Phillips, Brian Sterz, Royal McMakon, John Wilson, Ryan Schaffer, Peter Baldwin, Jeff Bruksch, Sean Ahkavi and Natti Heisler.

A volleyball club team made up of Westside high school students finished 12th in a National Junior Olympics tournament in Tampa, Fla.

The TRIMAD (That’s Right Ice Man, I Am Dangerous) club was coached by Jeff Kearin. Team members were Brendan Mally, Tony Houorka, Jeff Pockett and Alec Macguire of Loyola, John Tripp and Ian Fawcett of Venice High and Josh Agajanian and Tony Pirzadeh of Beverly Hills.

Tripp, the 1990 L.A. City 3-A Division player of the year, was named to the all-tournament team.

Jeff Speakman, star of the film “The Perfect Weapon,” will be among the martial arts experts demonstrating their skills at the Culver City Auditorium on Sunday at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the event go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and diabetes research.

Other celebrities expected to attend include David Alan Grier of the television show “In Living Color,” and Thomas Griffith of the film “Karate Kid III.”
