From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Ground water cleanup at George Air Force Base will be accelerated under a modified agreement that will allow the Air Force to avoid paying a fine for a late report, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said. Ground water at the base near Victorville is contaminated with industrial solvents and jet fuel. The agreement stemmed from talks between the EPA, the state Department of Toxic Substance Control, the California Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Air Force over assessment of penalties against the Air Force. The EPA assessed a $5,000 penalty against the service two months ago when the base failed to meet a schedule for submitting a report documenting the extent of soil and ground water contamination and evaluating cleanup options. The EPA said the Air Force agreed that there was a violation of the federal facilities agreement but invoked dispute resolution procedures.
