NOTES : Ellis Wins Women’s Race Across America

Cathy Ellis of Cambridge, Mass., won the women’s division of the Race Across America, crossing the finish line Thursday in Savannah, Ga., at 3:21 p.m. (PDT).

Ellis, 31, finished the 2,930-mile bicycle race in 12 days 6 hours 21 minutes, averaging 10 m.p.h. and 238 miles per day.

Second-place Debbie Ann Breaud of Burleson, Tex., is projected to finish at 2:30 p.m. today. It was the first RAAM for each of the four women who started the race July 27 in Irvine.

In the mixed tandem competition, Cherie and David Moore of Orange reached Savannah at 6:43 a.m. Thursday. They averaged 10.3 m.p.h. and 246 miles per day.

Fullerton resident Richard Son, who was leading after two days, ballooned to an 81 in the third round of the Ben Hogan Boys’ Junior Championships at the Four Seasons Resortin Irving, Tex.

Son had rounds of 70 and 67 the first two days.

His 81 Thursday tied him for the worst round of the day in the 15-18 division.

Son trails leader Jason Buha of Farmington Hills, Mich., by 10 shots.

In the boys’ 13-14 division, Robert Son of Fullerton shot a 78 to give him a three-day total of 222, 13 shots off the lead of Jeffrey Lawrence of Henryetta, Okla. Lawrence shot 71 Thursday for a three-day total of 209.

Ben Garner of El Toro had a 79 for a three-day total of 224.

Gordon’s Panthers of Cypress and the Orange County Batbusters each won two games Thursday and advanced in the Amateur Softball Assn. 18-and-under national championships in Columbia, Md.

The Panthers, led by former high school pitching standouts Jennifer Brundage of Irvine and Willa Parchen of Marina, beat the New Jersey Hurricanes, 6-0, and Sun Supply of Washington, 11-0.

The Panthers will play the Batbusters, who beat the Pittsburgh Patriots, 1-0, and the Tulsa Eagles, 2-0, today in the double-elimination tournament.

The Huntington Beach Outlaws beat the Ft. Collins (Colo.) Buckaroos, 8-0, Thursday in the first round of the ASA 16-and-under national championships in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Azure Caldarella had a two-run triple and finished with three RBIs for Huntington Beach. Candace Kollen, Laura Minard and Robin Northcraft had two hits each for Huntington Beach.

Stefanie Noffsinger pitched the first three innings of the game that was called after five inning because of an eight-run mercy rule.
