Belgian Racing Pigeon Bought for $144,000

BRUSSELS —
A Belgian racing pigeon named Playboy has been bought for $144,000 by a Japanese businessman, more than double the usual price for a champion bird, Belga news agency reported Friday.
The delighted seller, Jean-Luc van Roy from Ronse in southwest Belgium, said in an interview that he had been besieged with offers from Dutch and Belgian middlemen after Playboy won this year’s 620-mile Barcelona race, a high point in Europe’s pigeon racing calendar.
