From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Federal animal abuse charges leveled against Ocean World at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., drew about 35 angry animal rights activists to the marine park’s gates. The charges by the U.S. Department of Agriculture could lead to heavy fines or the temporary closing of the 25-year-old aquatic theme park. A USDA civil complaint said that dolphins had been kept in an undersized petting pool in over-chlorinated water that made their skin peel off. In addition, the park is accused of causing trauma, behavioral stress, physical harm and unnecessary discomfort to the captive animals and failing to provide adequate veterinary care.
