QUALITY CONTROL: Jackie Autry (A1) has learned the business of baseball since husband, Gene, dubbed her an owner-in-training after they wed 10 years ago. . . . One key lesson, she recalls, was considering character, as well as talent, when getting players. Says Autry: “One of the things Gene Mauch said to me was, ‘Jackie, when you sign a ballplayer, always look at the character of the individual. Don’t look at his statistics. Statistics are nice, but you have to have a combination.’ ”
