Poway’s Chip Lyles hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to lead Orange County to the Continental Amateur Baseball Association 13-and-under World Series title with a 23-3 win over Knoxville, Tenn., The game was played in McCook, Neb.

Orange County scored six runs in the first inning and added four more in both the third and fourth innings to take a 14-3 lead. The Californians added three runs in the fifth and six in the sixth.

Brett Brown, a sophomore last year at Mesa College, had two two-run doubles to lead the Angels to a 7-1 victory over the Cubs in the San Diego Collegiate League Championship at San Diego State’s Smith Field. The two teams, comprised of area college players, are the division winners from a 30-game regular season. The Angels can clinch the title tonight with a second victory. A Cub victory will force a third game Monday.

U.S. International’s Takaaki Sigiyami added a two-run homer for the Angels. Mesa’s Jim Thomas struck out nine, walked one and pitched a two-hitter to earn the victory.

RUNNING

Jose Resendo defeated Gabino Toledo by nine seconds to win the Mothers Against Drunk Driving 10K in Balboa Park. Resendo, 23, finished in 30 minutes 48.0 seconds to win the 18-29 age group. Toledo, 21, clocked 30:57.0.

Laura Stuart, 26, won the women’s title with a time of 36:05.4. Maria Elena Morales, 22, clocked 37:44.6.

Notable class winners Kathy Howe (40-49), fourth overall; Christie Spahr (30-39), fifth; and 17-year-old Charaighn Foss (13-17), eighth.

Among the men were: Henry Chio (30-39), third overall; and Marty King (40-49), 10th.
