From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, New York Mayor David N. Dinkins and Boston Mayor Raymond L. Flynn addressed hundreds of people who gathered in Bridgeport, Conn., for the start of a six-day protest march. The crowd chanted “Keep hope alive!” and “Save the cities, save the towns!” as Jackson criticized what he called government apathy toward domestic problems. “The President can bail out the savings-and-loan industry and the Soviet Union. Now it’s time to bail out America,” he said. Jackson has spent weeks visiting Connecticut cities to drum up support for his “human needs agenda,” emphasizing unemployment, the medical insurance crisis and urban problems. The 54-mile trek between two of America’s poorest cities is to end at the state Capitol in Hartford, Conn., on Saturday.
