SAN CLEMENTE : Waste Reduction Hearing Scheduled

Share

A public hearing scheduled for Aug. 21 will launch a six-month review period for San Clemente to comply with statewide waste reduction laws.

The city has until January to comply with the Source Reduction and Recycling Element and Household Hazardous Waste Element laws. They are designed to reduce the amount of trash and hazardous waste going to California’s rapidly diminishing landfills, according to a report by Michael Morgan, the city’s Solid Waste Coordinator.

In South County, San Clemente and the neighboring cities of Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and Laguna Niguel have signed a joint agreement to comply with these laws as a regional unit.

However, each city must individually hold public hearings on the joint plan, Morgan said.

Steps taken so far to reduce household garbage in South County include a pilot curbside recycling program covering 1,000 homes in San Clemente and additional homes in San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point.
