Truckers Vow to Withhold Cargo in Labor Protest
About 60 tractor-trailer rigs remained parked outside a Carson business Monday while truckers vowed to withhold at least $200,000 worth of cargo until a list of their employment demands are met.
Approximately 100 truckers have been camped with their cargo--some of it perishable--in front of H&M; Terminals Transport Inc. on Watson Center Road since Saturday. The truckers are demanding that the company make them eligible for employee benefits.
Ernie Nevarez, an accountant and consultant to the Waterfront Rail Truckers Union, an uncertified union representing the workers, said H&M; Terminals has routinely deducted money from the truckers’ paychecks for workers’ compensation and liability insurance. But, because the company lists them as independent contractors, the workers are not eligible to collect those benefits, Nevarez said. Representatives at H&M; Terminals, who have sought a preliminary injunction, declined comment.
