Petr Korda overcame a slow start and a poor service game in beating Jean-Philippe Fleurian, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round of a tournament at New Haven, Conn.
Korda, seeded 11th, fell behind in the first set, 3-1, then won five consecutive games. Twelfth-seeded Cristiano Caratti withdrew because of stomach cramps.
No. 13 Omar Camporese defeated Wally Masur, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4; 15th-seeded Richard Krajicek had nine aces en route to a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Christo van Rensburg; and 16th-seeded Marc Rosset beat Mark Woodforde, 6-4, 6-2.
