STANTON : 140 Answer Call for Marrow Donor

Hoping that they might be able to save an 8-year-old Stanton girl’s life, more than 140 people showed up at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center on Tuesday to be tested as possible bone marrow donors.

Christie Kowalsky suffers from aplastic anemia, a blood disorder that attacks the immune system, leaving her susceptible to a wide range of illnesses. She has been hospitalized repeatedly since March.

Her family hopes that a bone marrow transplant will cure her, but an acceptable match can be found in only one in 20,000 donors.

Hospital spokeswoman Tracy Greenwood said the response of volunteers willing to be tested overwhelmed the hospital’s ability to provide blood tests Tuesday.

Both Christie and her mother Kathy attended the three-hour drive Tuesday.
