La Jolla SummerFest ’91 Lineup

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Bigger does not automatically mean better, but the scope of this season’s La Jolla SummerFest, which runs today through Aug. 30, has expanded appreciably. This sixth SummerFest season includes 11 concerts, three master classes, two symposiums, as well as the traditional children’s concert.

Next weekend promises the most high-powered offerings. For the Aug. 23 chamber orchestra concert at UC San Diego’s Mandeville Auditorium, maestroes Andre Previn and Heiichiro Ohyama will alternate on the podium. Previn will conduct the orchestra, made of festival players and members of the San Diego Symphony, in Mozart’s Symphony 29 and violinist Cho-Liang Lin in Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto. Ohyama will direct cellist Gary Hoffman in the Haydn Cello Concerto.

In a contrasting musical setting, Previn will be joined by jazz musicians Ray Brown and Mundell Lowe in an all-jazz concert on Aug. 24 at Copley Symphony Hall. The matinee concert Aug. 25 offers an all-Baroque chamber ensemble program that includes J.S. Bach’s Third Brandenburg Concerto and Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins.

Following last year’s successful program to cultivate and showcase younger musical talent, 11 aspiring musicians-in-residence will work under the tutelage of SummerFest artists. These “Rising Stars” will be presented in concert Aug. 22 and Aug. 29. They will also participate in the symposiums given by musicologist Eric Bromberger.

Among the free SummerFest events are a pair of open rehearsals at Sherwood Auditorium on Saturday (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) and Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. Master classes on Saturday with cellist Ralph Kirschbaum (2 p.m.) and on Aug. 24 with pianist David Golub (4 p.m.) are also open to all observers.
