One man was killed and another critically wounded in a liquor-store holdup, police said.

The incident occurred at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, when a male suspect entered the Deliquory Liquor Store, 701 Broadway, asked for money and then began firing a gun, an El Cajon police spokesman said.

Store owner Thomas Mikhael, 31, who was shot in the stomach, died during surgery at Sharp Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokesman said. A 17-year-old clerk whose name was not released was listed in critical condition late Sunday at UC San Diego Medical Center.

Witnesses reported seeing a male run from the store, and a brown Toyota sedan carrying two other males speed from the area.

A suspect, Hai Van Nguyen, 19, of Garden Grove, who was found hiding in an apartment complex at 701 N. Mollison Avenue, was arrested about two hours after the shooting, police said. He was booked into County Jail downtown on suspicion of armed robbery and murder.

The other suspects remained at large Sunday night.
