Roy W. Paul Sr.; Retired Firefighter

Roy W. Paul Sr., Glendale’s oldest retired firefighter, has died at a Glendale nursing facility. He was 93.

The longtime Glendale resident died Saturday of complications from a stroke, said his son, Robert Paul of Glendale.

Paul was born in Montgomery County, Ill. He served as a second lieutenant in the Army during World War I and came to California in 1925. He was hired by the Glendale Fire Department one year later.

From the late 1930s to early 1940s, Paul served as editor and publisher of The Siren, a monthly publication for firefighters that circulated throughout Southern California. A graduate of the Glendale Fire College, Paul rewrote many of the training lessons and also revised lessons of the Los Angeles Fire College. A fiddle player, Paul also helped form a Fire Department band. He retired in 1956. Paul was a member of the Elks Lodge 1289 and the American Legion Post 127, both in Glendale.

In addition to his son, Robert, Paul is survived by his wife of 59 years, Agnes Paul; sons Robert Paul of Glendale and Roy Paul Jr. of Cortez, Colo., and three grandchildren.

A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at Kiefer & Eyerick Mortuary, 314 E. Harvard St., Glendale, which is handling the arrangements. Private burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale. Donations can be made in Paul’s name to the Verdugo Hills Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
